“Little Fiel” (sneak preview)
Over the past five months Irina Patkanian, Chris Langer and Gus Ford have been relentlessly working on a new stop motion animation called Little Fiel. A mix of documentary and stop motion storytelling, Little Fiel is loosely based on the personal narrative of a renowned Mozambican artist Fiel dos Santos. After loosing much of his family during a 16-year-long civil war, Fiel has become one of the more influential sculptors of Mozambique, using recycled materials as well as decommissioned weapons as his medium. In the spring of 2009, Irina and Chris traveled to Maputo, Mozambique for a documentary project, met Fiel, and became enthralled by the intoxicating horror of his sculptures- beautiful preachers, singers and dancers created from rusted Kalashnikovs and ak-47s. Fiel told Irina and Chris his life story.. and Little Fiel was born. This spring Fiel made sculptures of all 8 members of his family from decommissioned guns especially for the film based on his life.
Stop motion is a labor of love – with 30lb sculptures made of guns it’s a lot of labor.
Come see a little sneak peak at the work and meet the sculptures themselves.
We’d love to share with you a little bit we have shot so far…
