PRIVATE MATERIALS: Studio Source Materials for Abstraction
with Judy Cooke
Private Materials is an informal installation of my studio wall—various newspaper clippings, drawings, street debris and Polaroid photos that have been in my many different studio spaces over 20 years. This collection is an ongoing visual source for my paintings and constructions.
Changing studios has involved sorting and regrouping this informal chaos, bringing new pieces next to old, altering the dialogue between these source materials. Rhythmic patterns emerge. Some pieces lose importance with a move, and I take them off the wall, setting them aside to be saved. Other pieces remain constant, though I pin them up without always knowing why.
Both the physicality of these materials and the dialogue between particular forms offer clues to my present and future work.
