Voodoo to Vogue is an overview of the history of tattooing, from the prehistoric era to the present, shared by one of America’s pioneer female tattoo artists, Shanghai Kate (http://shanghaikates.com/about_us.html).

Also shown will be excerpts from the movie Tattoo Nation, (http://tattoonation.com/) and a presentation of Kate’s art documentary collaboration with artist, filmmaker and photographer

Rona Yefman.

Shanghai Kate” Hellenbrand is in the unique situation of having begun tattooing in 1971 when women in the field were largely unknown. Her career is the longest of any American female tattoo artist, earning her the title “America’s Tattoo Godmother.” Kate has worked with the masters of modern American tattooing – from Sailor Jerry Collins of Hawaii to Ed Hardy, Jack Rudy, Michael Malone, Paul Rogers and Huck Spaulding – and penetrated the membrane between the four-color, military payday tattoo climate of the early 1970s to the present time with all of tattooing’s technological and artistic innovations.
