Work & Discussion with Anke Becker

ANONYMOUS DRAWINGS / THE PROJECT AND THE ARCHIVE

Anonymous Drawings was founded 2006 by the artist Anke Becker in Berlin, Germany. Since then, more than 5000 artists from all over the world have taken part in the project. Anonymous Drawings is an action against separation, competition and mono culture within the art-market and a tribute to the inexhaustible medium of drawing.

The idea: Drawings of international artists are presented anonymously in an exhibition. Every exhibition is preceded by an open call for participation on the Internet. The biographies of the participants are not requested and do not play any role in the selection: the selection will be made without looking at the names. All exhibited drawings are available for a symbolic unit sales-price of 150 Euro each. The given unit sales-price should be seen as a conceptual place-holder for any conceivable amount of money on the art market. The artist’s anonymity can only be revealed by a sale: the buyer takes the drawing right off the wall and the empty space left behind will be marked with the artist‘s full name and point of origin.

The Anonymous Drawings Archive came into being through all Anonymous Drawings exhibitions since 2006. This Archive of more than 900 drawings from all over the world can be shown as a traveling exhibition nationally and internationally. All archived works are artists’ donations supporting the project. The archive changes continuously with every sale and with every call for participation.

At This Red Door Anke Becker will present the Anonymous Drawings Project and talk about the value and beauty of the Anonymous Drawings Archive as a collaborative work of conceptual art. She will show images of archived works and talk about her way of combining single works into a total yet changeable work of art.

How does one’s own assessment change if there is no information at all about the artist?  What’s about the value art if the sales price is standardized? What is a good drawing? (…)

At the end of the talk we would be happy to discuss with you these questions and more.
