Three Paintings

 

In this discussion the artists Sangram Majumdar, Patricia Treib and Karla Wozniak will examine the lifecycle of one of each of their paintings, shedding light on the space between blank canvas and art object.

 

 

Sangram Majumdar’s work is rooted in perception. Working from found and constructed realities, his work explores the gap between what we think we know and what is right in front of us. Recent shows include a solo exhibition at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, New York, 2012, and a group exhibition at Tracy Williams Ltd., New York. He spent the past summer “hopping camps” from the MacDowell Colony to Yaddo.

 

Patricia Treib’s abstractions are based on perceptual contradictions and inconsistencies inherent in vision itself. The paintings seek to bring about a feeling of simultaneity: the sensation that every act is happening at once in a continual present.  Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York, The Mystery Trend, at Wallspace in New York, and We Remembered, We Anticipated a Peacock and We Found a Peony, a two-person exhibition at Golden Gallery in New York.  Treib lives and works in Brooklyn.

 

Karla Wozniak is a Knoxville, TN based artist who makes paintings of the American landscape that are constructed in response to her surroundings, and molded and articulated through the process of painting. Wozniak’s recent exhibitions include Magic Mountain, at the University of Vermont’s Colburn Gallery, Burlington, VT, Significant Landscapes at the Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco, CA and London Calling: The first AIM Biennial at the Bronx Museum, Bronx, NY.  In 2011 she received a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts.
